Description Large drawing of Andersonvilla Prison. Mr. Edward Rogers, Minneola, Kansas was a veteran (Civil War) and was a prisoner in this camp for 6 months.

Consisit of a strong stockade 20 feet in height enclosing 2 acres. The Stockade is formed of strong pine logs, firmly planted in the ground. The Main stockagae is surrounded by two other similar rows of Pine logs. The middle stockage being 16 feet high and the outer 12 feet. These are intended for the offense and defense. The surface soil of these hills is composed chiefly of sand with varying admixtures of clay and oxide of iron. The Stockade was built in February 1864 to accommodate only 16,000 prisoners and included at first 17 acres and by the close of the month of June the area was enlarged by 10 acres, During the month of March 1864 each prisoner had 7 square yards of space. In June only 4 square yards. From February to September 9, 479 deaths occured, only 2/3 had been recorded. 15,000 prisoners were were confined within the limits. Each day the dead were carried out by their fellow prisoners and deposited on the ground under a bush arbor just outside the gate. The dead were buried without coffins, side by side, in trenches 4 feet deep. The deaths exceeded 100 per day.
