Object Name Locomotive
Description The "Pioneer" was an unusual locomotive for the American Railroad in the 1850's. It';s general arrangement was that of the rigid English locomotive that had earlier proven unsuitable for U. S. Railroads. However, the objections were more apparent than real for the "Pioneer" and other engines of the same design proved to be very successful when used for light passenger traffic which they were designed for. The single pair of driving wheels and no track, all wheels being rigidly fixed to the frame, set the "Pioneer" off from the highly successful standard eight wheel engine of this period which was about 4 feet long. "Pioneer" ran the length of its service life on the Cumberland Valley Railroad connecting the Susquehanna and Potomac Rivers in South Central Pennsylvania between 1852 and 1881. It was retired from regular service because it was too light for the heavier cars coming into use.
